SENIMA: a project to support social enterprises

SENIMA (Social ENterprIses Management) is an Erasmus+ project that aims to promote social entrepreneurship by equipping participants with the skills and tools necessary for the growth and development of the social sector.

Social enterprises, which are becoming increasingly popular, are “hybrid” businesses that combine market and non-market sources of finance to meet economic, social and environmental needs. Their main objective is not necessarily to make a profit but to achieve social impact.

The consortium which is the owner of the Senima project brings together six different partner organisations from Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Cyprus. The project partners include a higher education institution (Uniwersytet Lodzki, consortium leader), an accreditation and certification organisation (Eurocert), a web development company (PCX Computers & Information Systems Ltd.), a corporate governance organisation (LT Synergy Ltd.), a non-profit social enterprise (PRISM Impresa Sociale S.R.L.). Hungary is represented by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Csongrád-Csanád County.

The target groups of the project are primarily SMEs, start-ups and entrepreneurs interested in social enterprising, but the programme can also be useful for business owners, managers, and employees to apply the Senima concept to develop their companies; management and business consultants to support their target groups; VET providers, trainers, chambers of commerce and industry to broaden their programme offer, as well as EU networks and other policy actors.

Within the framework of the Senima project a 4-module syllabus has already been developed, focusing on the following key areas:

1. Social enterprises’ business models and legal forms,

2. Innovation in the social sector,

3. Financial management for social enterprises,

4. Governance and social enterprises.

The SENIMA project website is now available in English, as well as in the languages of the partner countries (Hungarian, Greek, Italian and Polish) and contains the first result of the project, the Senima Syllabus. The website will also include tools and resources to further support the learning process. The Senima Toolkit and Applied Case Study, which will be developed in the next phase of the project, will enable the project’s target groups to acquire credible and easily adaptable knowledge and methods on social entrepreneurship. At the end of the learning process, the participants will be able to certify their achievement with the Senima Certification.

The first newsletter of the consortium was published in December 2022. It presents the project and its objectives, introduces the project partners and provides more detailed information about the different modules of the Senima Syllabus.

Running until January 2024, the project is co-funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ programme and is in line with the Commission’s Entrepreneurship 2020 Action Plan, which highlights the importance of entrepreneurship education and the need to create an environment in which entrepreneurs can grow and develop.
